About a week and a half ago we had a visit from our American ambassador to PNG and his entourage. Apparently they were traveling the Highlands Highway and we offer one of the few friendly, comfortable stops along the trip. He gave a short speech in our gym (even though I know for a fact there were some Canadians in there.)

Here are the two important things I learned in the meeting:

  1. PNG is “competing” with Turkmenistan for the most expensive internet access in the world. This is apparently due to taxes, fees, etc. Thanks PNG gov’t.
  2. While the ambassador may be a VIP, his job is to represent American interests in PNG. The guy who is important to us is the Consul–his job is to take care of American citizens who need help in PNG. One of my new favorite people. He’s this guy:
