Today this guy, Reuben, came to see me. He started off telling me that he has a “worry” that is really concerning him. He wants to live a good life and wants his family to be happy. Do I have any advice I can give him, he asked. He wants some “spiritual” help, he says.
As I explained how important it is for me to learn his language before trying to help him with such issues so that I can communicate clearly and not confuse him, I was thinking how his questions and desires make me want to work as hard as possible and learn as quickly as possible. Then, in a very typical PNG manner, after much beating around the bush, he got to his real point. He was volunteering to help me learn the language–a paying gig for him. So I went very quickly from feeling motivated to work hard for his benefit to questioning the motives of his visit and the sincerity of his first request. I am reminded of Romans 3:10-11
as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD”
I am also reminded that we are here not because anyone deserves to hear the gospel, but because we are following God’s direction and seeking his glory.
