Yesterday while walking around our village I came upon these two teenagers making a batch of mashed-banana-roll-ups. That’s not the Menyan name, but it’s accurately descriptive. (Side note: this is the closest thing to a date I’ve seen since moving to PNG.)

The pair had mashed the bananas before my arrival so they were already in the roll-up process which starts with smearing banana mash across a bed of leaves.


Then the leaves are rolled up like a burrito’s tortilla.

Then they are added to the pot for boiling.

These will be sold in the afternoon wherever people congregate. I have not yet tasted an MBRU–I have enough digestive system issues as it is.
