Ant Farm

Ant Farm

This evening I picked up our Kindle for the first time in a few weeks after having read a couple of books printed on actual paper–I’m so retro, I know. Anyway, there was an ant crawling across the screen which isn’t unusual since all of our walls are infested with ants that are immune to any kind of bait or spray that isn’t showered directly on them. I smashed the ant, but then saw another and another. Because I knew the ants were not coming from my...

The picture above is of our strainer catching bugs from the flour. I mentioned this a few days ago on Facebook, but here I would like to provide a comprehensive list of the things we have consumed after removing the bugs. Flour Sugar Peanut Butter* Honey Raisins Corn Meal Water** Breakfast, lunch and dinner*** Just about every variety of fruit and vegetable that we can buy here. *Peanut Butter was definitely the most challenging thing to get bugs (ants) out of...

Getting groceries here in Mibu is quite different from a trip to BiLo in America. When the helicopter comes in, it costs about $1200 so you can imagine that the Husas try to pack it as full as possible every time they order supplies. This last time (on the trip we came in on) their butter was somehow left off the flight. They have been trying to figure out if it is worth diverting another flight (flown by another mission) to a nearby airstrip for about $200 and then...

Taking out the trash is a bit more of a process here than at home. It starts with three separate receptacles in our house.

Contrary to how some of our pictures make it seem, we are not living in paradise.

Laundry

Laundry is a little different here.  It is definitely more of a process.  We are using what they call a “twin tub” washing machine, which, coincidentally, has 2 tubs.  One tub is for washing and the other is for spinning. To wash, I run water from a hose into the tub on the left and then add clothes and soap.  Then after 10 min or so Ipull the clothes out and move them over to the spin tub, on the right.  After they spin for about 2 min, I take them out...

After visiting the 2 stores the other day, we went to the local market.  It was so great!  Fruits and veggies here are way cheaper than the things at the grocery store.  It seems so backwards, since in the US fruits and veggies are more expensive.  So I guess we will be eating more fruits and veggies here!  One of our favorite cheap, easy meals so far is an avocado, tomato and cucumber sandwich…yum!  All the fresh produce is so nice! That big bag on my...

On Saturday we went shopping in town with the couple who has been showing us around and the other new family who arrived about 2 weeks before us.  We went to 2 stores and the market, but I’ll save the market pics for a later post. The first store we went to was called Papindos.  I was impressed as we walked in that they had buggies so I would have a place to put Everett.  That was my only positive first impression.  The place smelled TERRIBLE and was pretty...
